PRISONER'S DESPERATE ACT
. _«&. [II TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Pakuehston North, Tuesday. Shortly before 10 o'clock this morning a sensation was caused at the police station by the discovery that a prisoner named Edward Jones, alias Johns, who was yesterday convicted for assault on a little girl at Ashhurst, bad attempted to cut his throat. The. man was in the prisoners' yard with six others, and when found was kneeling down bleeding at the throat. The wound was caused by a piece of tin about 2in in length. Medical aid was called, and the man was taken to the hospital, when it was found that his injuries were not serious, and he is progressing satisfactorily. The matter was announced in the Supreme Court, where the prisoner was to have been brought up for sentence, and Mr. Justice Cooper remanded hint for a week, also directing that an examination as to his mental faculties be maQe.
