A SUPPOSED LUNATIC,

WALKS FROM AUCKLAND TO i, GISBORNE. [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisboene, Wednesday. A commotion was caused at a settler's house near Rimuroa station at Waimata yesterday afternoon by the appearance of a strange man with torn and tattered clothing, who demanded food. A lady forthwith proceeded to comply with the request, but the man's subsequent actions caused her to faint. - Upon the appearance of a couple of men the stranger became violent, and a severe struggle ensued. Police were summoned from town, and the man was taken into custody for examination as to his sanity. The stranger states that he walked over from Auckland in seven days, coming previously from Timaru "walking across'the straits." He also- relates how he hid a big sum of money along the road under a pile of manuka. .. >. He was charged with lunacy and was submitted to medical examination.
