Dear sir,—On behalf of the members of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association, we, the undersigned, beg to express our'appreciation of the excellent work you have done during the past 17 years as inspector of stock in charge, and superintendent of Government experimental farms and orchards, etc., in the Auckland district. We know and appreciate the fact that the work has been most efficient, and recognise that it has been more helpful to us because of the kindly and ' sympathetic manner in which it has been carried out. In congratulating you on your promotion, we cannot but feel that although the district has lost the special services of an officer whom it will be difficult to replace, yet the farmers of the colony will be the gainers by the appointment." This was signed by the president and members of the executive of the association. Mr. Day, in making the presentation, referred to the good work done by Mr. Clifton in the interests of the farming community, and the regret all felt at his removal to Wellington. Mr. Clifton, in reply, expressed his sincere thanks at the expression of goodwill. Whilst living amongst them for 16 years as inspector of stock, it had frequently fallen to his lot to administer the Act in a drastic and severe way, and if he had been fortunate enough to escape the many pitfalls .he was indeed lucky, but in the successful administration of that Act he had to rely upon the assistance of the officers of the Department in Auckland province. On their behalf, and on behalf of his wife and family, he wished success to the district, and to this city, for it was fast becoming a city, and to the development of the great enterprise they hud undertaken. During the day lectures were given by Mr. Hopkins, apiarist, and Mr. Hyde, poultry expert.
