ALLEGED- THEFTS FROM-

HOTELS.

AN UNWELCOME VISITOR.

At the Polico Court- yesterday, before Messrs. F. H. Pickering and G. H, Powley, J.P.'s, Andrew Lund, alias Guilford, alias Andrews, was charged with stealing from the Wayerley Hotel a suit of clothes and a pair of boots, valued at £5 17s 6d, the property of Thomas Ferncr; from the British Hotel, a bracelet and a greenstone heart, valued at £6 2s 6d, the property of Georgina Stationer; and from the Metropolitan Hotel three collars, valued at 2s 3d, the property of Edwin Cooper. Sub-Inspector Gordon prosecuted, . and accused was undefended. All of the charges were heard together.

Lindsay Cooke, licensee of the Metropoli- t tan Hotel, said that .on the evening of * June 20 he heard someone in his bedroom. * Ho tried to open the door, which was lock- j ed, but could not do so. Witness after- j wards heard the window in his bedroom be- > ing pushed open, and in a few minutes he ? saw Lund sitting on the fire escape. Ac- j cused, who pretended to be drunk, said, * "It's all right. Where am I? I thought i this was the Waverley." Witness induced j Lund to leave the fire escape, and sent for ] tho police. On searching the accused, Ser- ] geant Murphy found three collars on.him, i belonging to one of the boarders. Witness < did not miss anything from his bedroom, < and everything was in good order. \ John H. Pagni, licensee of the British - Hotel, said that on June. 20. he saw Lund ' in the hotel. ' ~. .',','. Georgina Staffoner, barmaid, said, she missed a gold bangle, a greenstone heart, and 2s from a box in her bedroom. Thomas Ferner, a boarder at the Waverley Hotel, deposed that on June 20 a suit of clothes, a pair of boots, and-a pair of ' braces were stolen from a portmanteau in ' his bedroom. John Walker, labourer, pleaded guilty . to committing a breach of the peace in \ Lome -street. Sub-Inspector Gordon said , that defendant and another man were > fighting in the street. David Stewart, cabdriver, was ordered ' to pay 7s costs for drivi.ig his vehicle i round the corner of Karangahape Road and Pitt-street at other than a walking pace. j Henry Green was remanded until this f morning on charges of drunkenness and 3 let*using to quit the Star Hotel when re--3 quested to do so. - J -For committing a nuisance in Durhamstreet on Wednesday' Frederick Watson, -' a seaman, was sentenced to one month's 5 imprisonment. j Adam McKeown and Martha Barlow, r charged with drunkenness and with comu mitting a breach of their prohibition , orders, were remanded until this morning. '" Two boys, Stanley and James Gemmell, n were charged with ringing the Albert- ,. street firebell. James Gemmell pleaded e guilty and his brother not guilty. After x warning the boys the Bench discharged *. them, on paying costs (9s). Dr. Herbert M. Goldstein pleaded guilty „ to driving a vehicle in Karangahape.
