RIFLE SHOOTING.
ENCOURAGEMENT BY THE FARMERS' UNION.

Wellington, Wednesday. At tho request of the Farmers' Union Major Hughes appeared before the Conference to-day and explained the Defence Department's regulations governing rifle clubs. The Conference adopted a remit from Otago to tho effect that it was desirable that rifle clubs should bo formed in country districts under the auspices of the' Farmers' Union. Various delegates urged that settlers should 1 give more attention to defence matters, both in regard to discipline and marksmanship. The president said the executive of the union had now in hand a fund to provide a shield, to be shot, for by members of the union who belonged to rifle clubs.
