"A COWARDLY ASSAULT."

At the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. J. J. O'Brien and C. Norgrovc, J.P.'s, Henry Campbell, carter, for whom Mr. W. K. Hacketfc appeared, pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife.

Sub-Inspector Gordon said the accused came homo and found his wife out; When she returned he threw a candlestick at her and dragged her about by the hair. Mrs. Campbell was bruised about the- eyes, checks, and head, and had to be attended to iby a doctor. ~

Accused said his wife wont out and left tho children alone, and when he came homo they were all crying. He went to bed, and his wife arrived home some time afterwards. As he did not open the door immediately she pushed her head through the window, injuring herself. He did not throw a candlestick at his wife.

Tho Bench described the assault as cowardly and aggravated, but taking into consideration the fact that the complainant did not wish her husband to bo sent to prison a fine of 20s and costs £4 would be inflicted.

AN IMPUDENT THEFT. John Can- pleaded not guilty to stealing a pair of boots valued at 10s, the property of James Brown.

Chief-Deiectivo Marsack called witnesses to show that on June 29 complainant visited the Domain, took his boots off, and went to sleep. When ho awoko he found his.boots gone. The boots were afterwards recovered in a second-hand dealer's shop, where they had been sold by the accused for 2s. Carr, who said he found the boots, was fined 10s and costs 14s. A LOST CHEQUE'. Patrick Hcgarty pleaded not guilty to stealing a cheque for £2 5s 9d, the property of Fredk. Hcskcth. . Sub-Inspector Gordon called evidence to show that complainant lost the cheque and j accused picked it up and cashed it. When ho was arrested by Constable A. Halliday he admitted cashing the> cheque, but said ho did so for another man, who gave him 15s. Accused was sentenced to 14- days' imprisonment. ASSAULT. William Henry Smith pleaded not guilty to assaulting Wni. O'Brien, who said that ho asked prisoner for 5s which was owing him, and Smith struck him in the face. Defendant said O'Brien swore at him He was fined 10s and costs 2s 6d. A SERIOUS CHARGE. Robert Gibbs, alias Gibbons, ex-hotel-keeper at Ncavesville, was charged on re : maud on three informations that on March 27 at Auckland he obtained £12, £8,. and £5 from Alexander Johnston, Timothy O'Connor, and Michael Walsh respectively by valueless cheques. Three alternative charges of theft of these amounts wore also preferred against him. Mr. W. J. Napier, who appeared for ac- j cused, applied for a further remand until Wednesday next. Mr. Singer (for the prosecution) raised no objection to the remand, which was granted. OASES REMANDED. ; On tho application of Chief-Detective Marsack, Michael Li nob am was remanded to appear.at Dunediu on Thursday next on a charge of stealing a watch and.a pair of trousers. Albert Homan, alias Richard Smith, was charged with stealing a brief bag valued at 19s, the property of Walter Green, with stealing an overcoat valued at £2 10s, belonging to Robert Hanson. Accused was remanded for eight days, bail being allowed in one surety of £50. Mr. W. E. Hackett appoared for accused. MISCELLANEOUS. ' William Williams and George F. C. Dcnty pleaded guilty' to 'having-stowed away on board the s.s.. Rukaia from London. ■_ It was stated that accused had worked diligently on the passage from London to Auckland. Taking this into consideration the Bench convicted and discharged the. accused.

Thomas Blako and Samuel Croofces were each fined 5s and costs 7s for leaving their vehicles, unattended.

i Andrew Neilson, a third offender, was fined 10s and costs, or in default 48 hours' ;imprisonment, for drunkenness. A first offender was fined 5.5 and costs, or in'default [24 hours' imprisonment.
