THE PRICE OF KAURI.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Tuesday. The alleged timber ring in the Southern! portion of the colony was referred to by Mr. Diivey in his speech this evening. He said that when the export duty of 2s per hundred was taken into account the price charged for kauri at Christchurch was 7s a hundred less than that charged at Melbourne. The freight from the Kaipaia, he said, was about the same in each case. It had been stated that kauri could be sent to Melbourne and shipped back to Lyttelton and sold at less than the price charged for the timber obtained direct from Kaipara. He thought, however, that this could not be correct. An Hon. Member : It has been done! Mr. Davey said lie could hardly credit it. If the. men who owned or cut the timber got the extra 7s per hundred he wi/uld not complain, but they did not get it. There was something wrong in the matter, and he hoped that the 'Minister for Customs would look into it.
