EDEN' TERRACE ROAD BOARD. A, MEETING of tho Eden Terrace Road Board was hhUi hist, evening, there being present:: Messrs. J. I!, Garrett (chairman;, K. Wriarley. J. Donll. »nd tV. IF Husiett. Head Level: A communication was received from Messrs. Mucky. Logan, Caldwell ami Co.. asking the Board to complete tho formation of Summers-street, and offering to contribute __G towards the cost. The Council had undertaker' to compensate the School Board to the exlent of £>) for dedication, and defray any expensed incurred by any new alignments. It as decided to refer the matter to tho Board's solicitor. Accounts: Accounts amounting: to £55 4tf 3d were passed for payment. DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL. . Tho ordinary meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. Win. Handle;,-) presided, and there were also present: Messrs. 1). W, MoLean, P. \V McCallum. K. 11. If, Walker and .1. llurdio Neil. - The chairman extended a. welcome to the new members, and expressed the hopo that, all would do their utmost to assist education generally, Reports wero received tin to tho work in the various schools, being in tlio majority of cases satisfactory. .Several recommendations were ordered to bo sent to the Education Hoard. Accounts amounting to £101 13s lOd were passed for payment. PONSONUY LITERARY SOCIETY. The weekly meeting of the- Ponsonby Literary ami Debating Society was held in the Leys Institute on Monday evening. It being an open night, the programme- was provided by the Grafton Road Literary and Debating Society, and proved very enjoyable. Mr. O. 11. Ralph read an admirable essay upon tho life and works of Tennyson. Songs and recitations were also given by Misses Lawbourne. Elva White, Gordon, and D. Oil* more, and Messrs. Harold Burton, Medley, Burton, C. H. Ralph, and A. Lawry.

LIBERAL., AND LABOUR, FEDERATION. ... The monthly meeting of the Auckland East branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation was held on Monday, the president (Mr. G. L. l'cacocke) being in the chair. Resolution* were passed congratulating the Premier on his good work at. the- Imperial Conference, and tho Hon J. A. Tote and Mr. I. E. , , liaurae. M.H.R.. on their appointment* as King's Counsel. Resolutions were also passed sympathising with tho Hon. W. Hall-Jones iii his ill-health, and Mr. P. J. Nerheny (president of the Auckland branch) in his recent bereavement. Discussion of tho Land Bill was postponed until a fnturo meeting:. Tin* following resolution was also proposed and carried unanimously:—"That this branch hails with satisfaction the announcement, t that it is tho intention of tho Government to ■propose a remission of Customs duties on the necessaries of life, which will lighten the burden or taxation upon the- workers ox tho colony by a largo amount, without affecting legitimate public works expenditure. •
