WATERSIDE WORKERS' GATHERING.

THE Auckland' Waterside Union held a smoke concert at the Hibernian Hall last evening to mark the first six months of tho union's existence. There was a ■ vorji largo attendance. During tho evening musical and; other items were rendered by Messrs. A. S. Broadribb, A. Makituni, T. Brough, G. Bennett, J. Murphy, Blair, G. Davis, Marson, W. D. Jones, T. Slicphard,, A. Brown, Jenkins, and McDonald. ' Mr. W. Vauso proposed, the toast of tho "Auckland Waterside Workers' Union." He congratulated the union on its success, and hoped that it would go on and prosper. (Applause.) ."" '■•''. Mr. Way, in responding, said that it had been cabled from Wellington that the Cooks and Waiters' "Union had established a record by securing 730 members in 13 months;; but Auckland had a bettor record. Six months ago the first meeting of the waterside workers was held in his office, and' today it numbered tho satisfactory total of 633. (Cheers.) There was a credit balance in cash of over £90. So far the union's career had been very successful. Let them, all pull together and success was certain. Ho hoped before long to bo able to devise a. scheme for aiding members in sickness and' succouring widows and children. Mr. G. Bennett proposed "Kindred Unions," and spoke at length on the necessity for bringing about a.confederation of unions. Mr. Brown (Klourmillers* Union) responded and congratulated the union on its: success. The president then, on behalf of the union, presented the secretary, Mr. Way, with an inscribed gold albert and medallion. He was sure that they would all agree with him when Iks said that Mr. Way had worked loyally and hard to make the union the success if. was,.arid ho was only too pleased on behalf of the. union to tender him this recognition, of appreciation. Mr. Way thanked the members. At the outset he had given, the union a promise and made certain prophecies.' Tho success of the union was the greatest reward he could enjoy. He would esteem tho gift.
