AUCKLAND A V. UNIVERSITY. Auckland attacked immediately after the bully-off, and after a scramble in the circle Mason scored. Shortly afterwards Mason put another shot into the net, and then Armstrong scored. University livened up after this, and' one of their forwards scored. After a lot of give-and-take play BrookeSmith (Auckland) scored from a " corner," and it was not long before Mason notched his 'third goal. In the. second spell University improved considerably, and their forwards indulged in some clever passing, but the Auckland backs proved too great a stumbling block, and they failed to score. The whistle sounded, leaving Auckland the winners by 5 goals to 1. , Mr. T. H. Wright refereed with satisfaction. Kavanagh was the best of the Auckland backs, and of the forwards Mason and Jessup. Speight, McClure, and Tinsley played well amongst the 'Varsity backs, and Jacobsen, Rands, and Alderton showed tip prominently in the forwards. The game showed how even a little combination can overcome indiscriminate hitting and bunching. In the second sp'ell the College especially played a good combined game, but there tras inaccurate shooting. Almost all of the forwards obtained goals Mark (2), Crispe (2), Masefield and Nuvel on© each. For St. "George's, the right fullback played a hard game. , - For the College, ' JSfuvel and A. Webster showed pretty combination on the right whig, several •of the goals resulting from their play. The fullbacks also combined well, H. Webster hitting very neatly. Ellerslie, beat Ponsonby's first juniors by sto 2. For the losers, goals were scored by Corbridge and Furness, and for the winners by Smith (2), Walker, Hay, and Perry. Ponsonby played two men short, but Ellersli» played with better combination than previously. The forwards played well, especially Smith and Hay, while Laud, Phillips, and Cummings were, the best of the backs. Mr. Hay gave every satisfaction as referee. The Ellerslie Club "dispensed afternoon tea at the close, of the game. : In the second junior grade Epsom defeated Auckland by 10 goals to nil. Davis scored two, T. A. Williams three, MoCowan two, and Becroft three!, Auckland played five men short, and Epsom one. . . ; ..
