NAVAL PATROLS.
VESSELS FOR THE WEST INDIES. By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright. . London, May 9., The cruiser Scylla (3400 tons) is to join H.M.s. Indefatigable on the West Indies station. • • The Indefatigible and;Scy]la axe sister ships. • The placing of, these vessels on the station is in response to the public indignation at the, time of .the. Kingston earthquake, when it was found that there were no - British warships in . the West '• Indies ! waters, and that this fact had justified the American Admiral in "landing armed! parties. In a speech at Leeds, in February, Mr. Churchill said the lesson to be drawn from the Sir Alexander Sfrettenham-Ad- [ miral Davis incident was' that special squadrons of warships " of, some sort or other" were needed to patrol the outlying possessions. Later the Admiralty admitted that it was intended to send) to the colonies subsidiary vessels not on the Navy List. There were protests against tins class of vessel being used for such a purpose. The cruisers being sent were launched in 1891 and 1892 respectively. -~
