The /nine* pictures which were selected from the; collection of paintings at the ; late New Zealand; International Exhibition at Christohurch'.for.;the Auckland Art Gallery. came to hand : yesterday. Four of -the pictures, as previously .'.' reported, were selected ,by Mr. E. W. 'Payton, on behalf of the City Council (which voted a sum of £500 for the purpose); one; has been presented by the Mayor (Mr. A. M. Myers); and three by Mr. E. Earie Vail©; whilst the other is the gift 'of the Hon. Geo.' Fdwlds. 1 /The pictures were unpacked at the gallery at the Municipal Buildings yesterday, and ' they will be hung shortly. - . ' ■■ ->■ ■:■.■.•; " '/The pictures purchased by the City Counoil consist of two oil and. two water-colour paintings. ' Tho, former /are "Tho Abbey Farm," " a ; characteristic English country scene, by ■•-J. L. Pickering, and "Serena, Found ;of Savages,": by T. ;B. Kennington, the incident being * taken from Spenser's "Faerie Queen." The -water-colours .are '■' On th«rHill : Top,".a Devonshire view, by Alfred Parson's, A.R. A, and " The' Fisher, man's Farewell," a, Cornish scene, by John R, Reid. The Mayor's, gift is a water-colour entitled,-- "First Aid," /by Frank Dadd, R.I. Mr. Vaile'a opntributions ■ include: ■ "The End of the Day '|(oil),"iby/H. K. Rooks, R.B.A:, an English sunset scene,, with striking • light and shade-,:effects; " Grannie's Care" (water-colour), by Tom MoEwan, R.S.W., and " A Country Road" (water- - colour), a New Zealand rural study, by D." K. Richmond. r The latest picture presented to the gallery is that, given by the' Hon. Geo.. Fowlds. It is the oil painting by Monro 8. Orr of tho : late Mr. Matthew Fowlds (father of..the.donor), and it represents the late centenarian weaving blankets in-his 100 th year. .
