ANTI-NATIONAL FANATICS.
GREAT AND GROWING DANGER, DISLOYAL FROM CONSCIENCE. SPEECH BY LORD MILNEB. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— (Received September 30, 4.22 p.m.) London, September 29. A deputation, headed by Sir Lewis Mitchell, has presented Lord Milner with an address signed by 25,000 people in Cape Colony, expressing appreciation of his services to South Africa and the Empire. Lord Milner, in thanking the deputation, said the danger which in South Africa impeded the great aim of the gradual fusion of the whites into one nation, as permanent members of the Empire, was disunion over minor local and personal questions. There was greater danger in the Motherland on account of the spirit of anti-nationalism. Whenever the country's interests were anywhere at stake, there were many people who felt impelled by conscience to take a side against her. Only Natal's great skill and promptitude in suppressing the recent rebellion had_saved England from a proZulu agitation. It was the same spirit that inspired the people who, fearing that Great Britain's power might be unjustly used, strove to keep the country weak, thereby exposing the Empire to the rapacity of the world. Anti-nationalism was a great and growing factor, but once dangCi was realised there would be a tremendous rally both here and in the colonics. Britishers would never permit their inheritance to be thrown away by anti-national fanatics. The Times, commenting on this speech, says the main body of the nation is not affected by antinationalism. In time of crisis the people would rally and stand together with the sister nations across the sea. The Daily Telegraph says it expects there will be a tremendous rally when the pernicious anti-nationalism is pushed too far; meanwhile the mischief will be done, and it will be eradicated only at tremendous cost.
