London, February 6. Mr. Walteu Long says the statement made that, having adopted the principle of fiscal protection, he is willing to accept the leadership of the Unionist party, is absolutely untrue, absurd, and offensive. He is, he says a loyal follower of Mr. Balfour.

The Canadian newspapers are eagerly discussing the situation in the Unionist party caused by the leadership question. They are in favour of Mr. Chamberlain being appointed leader.
I* ho statement was made by the Time?, audit was that Mr. Chamberlain was prepared to serve under Mr. Long, who fully agreed with his fiscal policy.
