MATERNITY HOSPITAL FOR AUCKLAND.
With a view to tho establishment of a maternity hospital, similar to those existing in Wellington and Dunedin, the Government has instructed Mrs. Grace Neil, the inspector of hospitals to report on a suitable site or building in Auckland. As soon as a choice has been made the Government will put the work in hand. It is not intended that the maternity hospital shall be a charitable institution, but it will bo for those who are not in a position to pay the present full charges. It is proposed that each inmate shall pay 30s a week, and this sum will include all necessary treatment for the confinement. Those unfortunate cases where girls are not- married will not be admitted to the institution. These will still be left to the charitable institutions, who at present look after such cases. The home will prove of great value in the training of nurses in midwifery. At present nurses in midwifery receive their principal training in Australia or England, but it is intended that by the work of the maternity hospital, a highlyefficient staff of niidwivea will in a few years be available for Auckland and district. In a few months it is hoped an up-to-date maternity hospital will be in existence in Auckland.
