A DISTINGUISHED VISITOR.

EXPLORER AND SPORTSMAN. Amongst the passengers leaving Auckland by the Rotorua express yesterday morning was Mr. H. W. Seton Karr, who has been staying at the Central 'Hotel.'.Mr. Seton Karr is a well-kilown traveller and sportsman, and'lie gives it as his opinion that in 10 or 15 years New Zealand will be one of the finest sporting oountries in the world. In the course of his wanderings over the earth, Mr. Seton Karr has visited India more than 20 time 3, chiefly in pursuit of big game, and he has been the guest of many of the native rulers who are, almost, without exception, keen sportsmen, especially delighting in tiger, and pig hunting excursions. His last expedition, just before the Russo-Japa-nese war, was with General Swayne, R.E., across Russia and Siberia into Mongolia, after the oris amon, the largest wild sheep in the world. This animal grows horns 58in in length, and, therefore, specimens are eagerly sought after by spoilsmen. Mr. Seton Karr's expeditions include 17 ■ into tropical Africa, nine across the Egyptian Sahara, and numerous journeys into Alaska, and other little-frequented parts of tho globe, including Persia, Zululand, Lapland, and Finland, and in the latter country ho found the trout-fishing very much like that in New Zealand. His brother, Sir H. Seton Karr, is a member of Parliament for the Premier's native town of St. Helens, in Lancashire. Mr. H. W. Seton Karr discovered the emerald mines and the ancient flint mines of Egypt, and has presented collections of different implements from these mines to all the museums in Australia and New Zealand. Those at present in the Auckland Museum will not be on view, till after the opening of the new ethnographical gallery, some months her.ee.
