Rear-Admiral Sir Wilmot Hawkesworth Fawkes has been appointed to succeed Vice-Admiral Fanshawe in command of the Australasian squadr \ The new commander of the Australasian fleet was born in 1846, and entered the navy in. 1860; attained the rank of commander 1880; ca'ptain, 1886; and was appointed Rear-Admiral commanding the cruiser squadron in 1902. He commanded the Royal yacht Osborne from 1834 to 1886 ; was naval adviser to the Inspector-General' of Fortifications 1891-2, and has been twice private secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty. Ho is at present in command of a cruiser squadron.
