THE REBELLION IN CRETE.

INTERNATIONAL TROOPS AT WORK. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— Constantinople, July 2. The international troops are engaged in suppressing the rebellion in Crete. After several houn' fighting 100 Russian troops have occupied Platania, and a French force has expelled the insurgents from Kalyves. The Italians also are sending marines into the interior.

The disorder in Crete was begun by the efforts of the High Commissioner, Prince George of Greece, to arrange 'the annexation of the island by Greece. The Powers interested— France, Russia, and Italy—refused to permit the annexation. Thereupon tlm Christians in the island " revolted," 'and Prince George informed the Powers that he was unable to restore order. The four Powers then sent marines to deal with the insurgents. The inhabitants numbered in 1900 303,543, of whom 269,319 were Greek, 33,496 Mussulmans, and 728 Jewish. Turkey is still the suzerain' Power.
