[BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Christcuubuh, Friday. Two 00-operative workers who have been employed on the Midland railway works just beyond Staircase Gully, have returned to Christchurch full of dissatisfaction at the -ate of wages received and the general treatment accorded to them. One of them, told a Press reporter that when, with others, ho was sent by the Labour Bureau to employment on the Midland railway the applicants for work were promised piecework wages at a rate which would enablo them to earn 8s a day. On arriving at Staircase Gully they found that this sum was being received by day workmen, who, ib is alleged, " loaf" half their time. The men interviewed, however, were paid at the rate of 5s 6d a day. The cost .of living was found to be considerable. They showed a bill for 18 days' provisions. Tho items comprised bread, butter, bacon, and potatoes. They would have come away sooner, they declared, but had to wait till they could pay their debts.
