DROWNED AT SEA.
A SECOND MATE WASHED OVERX BOARD.
Intelligence was received in Auckland yesterday of the drowning of Mr. F. Rouse, second mate of the Government schooner Countess of Ranfurly, during the .voyage of the vessel from Auckland to Nine. ■ Mr. Rouse, who was oniy 21 years of age, came to Auckland some time since as an apprentice ou board of the barque Isle of Erin. Leaving that- vessel at this port, he was engaged on a number of coastal vessels, and when Captain Champion joined the Countess of Ranfurly lie shipped in the schooner as second mate, this being his second voyage. The particulars regarding the accident by which he met his death are rather meagre, but it appears that during some heavy weather he was washed off the jibboom, and drowned. Mr. House was a native of Hampstead, London, where his parents reside. Captain Champion and the crew of the Countess of Ranfurly were much distressed at the occurrence by which they lost their shipmate, for he was very populai with all on board, and his parents will have the sympathy of many friends in Auckland over the sad fate of their son.
