MEETINGS.

ACCOUNTANTS AND AUDITORS' ASSOCIATION. The eighth lecture of the 1904 scries being delivered under the auspices of the New Zealand Accountants and Auditors' Association was given by Mr. Alex. Grierson, C.A., on Monday evening last at the Chamber of Commerce, Swanson-streefc, before a large and appreciative audience. The president of the association (Mr. A. S. Russell) occupied the chair. The subject was entitled "Various Forms of Book-keeping." At the conclusion of the lecture comments weir© made by various speakers, after which the chairman reviewed certain portions of the paper, and Mr. Grierson replied. It was announced that the next lecture, " Bills, Notes, and Cheques," by Mr. H. D. Bamford, LL.D., will bo delivered on the 28th hist.

THE BAPTIST TABERNACLE. The 48th. anniversary of the Auckland Tabernacle was celebrated in the church hail last evening by a tea and public meetin"-. Both functions passed off very successfully. As soon as tea was disposed of the public meeting was commenced. Pastor Clark, the chairman, congratulated the congregation on entering into their jubilee yea*, and he announced that special efforts would be mads during the ensuing 12 months to celebrate it. On the platform were the Revs. A. Whalley (Otahuhu), E. A. Kirkwood (Mount Roskill), and J. Luxford and Mr. S. H. Matthews (the church secretary), all of whom delivered addresses. Musical selections were given by the choir. The 49th annual report stated that there were at present 619 members on the roll. On tho third Sunday in May last Pastor Glark completed his seventh year of ministry with them, aud this event was celebrated by a social gathering. In the course of a short address then given, figures were quoted showing that during that short period 174 were added to the church by baptism, 39 by report, and 82 by transfer, thus making a yearly average of 42. The buildings ami, premises had been kept in good order and repair, but it was intended to make several improvements shortly. The ground which had been secured for a church site at Mount Roskill had been disposed of, £156 14s 5d profit arising from the sale. This money had been handed to the district association for meeting the cost of the erection of the church recently built at Grange Road. In. connection with the jubilee a committee had been appointed to report as to the ways and means by which that event could be specially marked.

MEN'S SOCIETY. The All Saints' branch of the Church of England Men's Society spent a very enjoyable musical evening on Tuesday, the accompanies being Messrs. W. F. Ehrlich and J. Gaidar. The programme consisted of the following items: — Songs by Archdeacon Calder,- Messrs. P. Simpson, K. Culpan, C. Mayall,. and F. Lawson ; quartette, Messrs. K. Culpan, P. Lawson, J. Calder, and C. Massey; violin solos, Messrs. B. Angus and P. A. Johnston; piano solos, Messrs. F. Lawson, W. F. Ehrlich; mouth-organ solo, Mr. N. Wallace; gramophone selections, Mr. P. Massey. ATHENJEUM LITERARY SOCIETY. A meeting of the Athenaeum Literary and Debating Society was held on Tuesday evening, Mr. H. A. Keesing presiding. The editor (Mr. F. H. Williamson) read the journal. This consisted of nine contributions. The articles were subjected to criticism by the members present, and Mr. Williamson briefly replied. MOUNT ALBERT ROAD BOARD. At the ordinary meeting of the Mount Albert Road Board, presided over by Mr. J. W. Harrison, a further application for the Board's approval to the proposed subdivision of land fronting the New North Road in Miller's Estate was rejected. A good deal of general work, which was requested by ratepayers, was referred to the Works Committee. Repairs were authorised, according to the foreman's estimate, to George and Charles Streets. Mr. Harrison gave notice to move at the next meeting, " That as soon as metal is available from the metalbreaker a quantity be carted to Kingsland Road with a view to permanently forming and metalling that road." Mr, Ellisdon gave notice to move, "That steps be taken to establish a fire brigade for the district." It was resolved that a special meeting of the Board be held for the purpose of framing water by-laws. The Chairman reported that the engineer recommends the substitution of 4in mains for l£in in several parts .of the district, notably in Clenmore, Kingsland, and Rocky Nook. Subsequently the Works Committee approved of the following: — Scoria for King-street repairs and for Gordon Road; complete filling at George and Charles Streets corner; repairs to stone wall at the side of New North Road, Morningside, and to set the copingstones in mortar; Mr. Carrie's application for scoria for a new footpath, subject to the footpath being formed to the satisfaction of the foreman. The matter of the footbridge ever the Archhill gully stream at the foot of Buchanan-street was referred to Mr. iuiisdon, with power to act, in conjunction with the chairman of the Archhill Road Board.

LIBERAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION. A meeting of the Auckland branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation was held m the Cook-street Hall last night, Mr. R. J. Nerheny (president) presiding. There were 25 members present. Communications were received from the Premier and from the Minister for Trade and Customs stating that the representations of the branch regarding the tobacco monopoly would receive the earnest consideration of the Government. The Colonial Secretary (Sir J. G. Ward), in acknowledging the branch's resolution upon the same subject, stated that the same had been referred to the Premier. Mr. Alfred Kidd, M.H.R., and the Minister for Native Affairs acknowledged similar cordrnunications on the same subject.
