Yorkshire, opened in fine weather, on a soft wicket, with an attendance of five thousand. Jones, Carter, and Armstrong stood out of the Australian team. The teams were as follow : — Yorkshire: Tunnicliffe, Brown, Denton, Taylor, Jackson, Hirst, Washington, Haigh, Hunter, Frank, Wainwright. Australia: Darling, Trumper, Hopkins, Hill, Gregory, Duff, Noble, Kelly, Trumble, Howell, and Saunders. Darling won the toss and sent Trumper and Hopkins to face the bowling of Rhodes and Hirst. When Trumper had made three he was finely caught by Hirst with one hand. One wicket for three. Hill succeeded the retiring batsman, only to see Hopkins bowled by Hirst. Two : :ckets for three.

Before Duff opened his account he was missed by Tunnicliffe at slip off Rhodes. Noble, who came to his assistance, was less fortunate. He tamely returned his first ball to Rhodes, who held it. Six wickets for 91.

Kelly's arrival and departure were equally sudden. He glanced his second ball to the slips, and it was splendidly held by Tunnicliffe. Seven wickets for 91.

Rhodes had now taken three wickets with four balls.

Rhodes played Saunders on without scoring. Eight wickets for 49. Wainwright was caught at long-off by Trumper. Nine wickets for 60. Whitehead was caught at mid-on by Saunders, the innings closing for 77. Starting Australian's second innings Darling made a couple and then sent one to Rhodes at cover-point. One wicket for two.

Hill joined Trumper, but the former was caught by Taylor at mid-on. Two wickets for 12.

Hopkins arrived in time to see Trumper caught at the wickets by Hunter, off Rhodes' first over. Three wickets for 23.

Hopkins hit out at Haigh, losing his wicket. Four wickets for 43. Gregory's partnership with Hopkins lasted twenty minutes. Duff reached out to Haigh, and was bowled. Five wickets for 59.

Noble made a single and then gave Rhodes a catch off his own bowling. Six wickets for 60. .

Gregory gave an excellent and skilful display, and raised hisS score to 31 for an hour's batting. , When stumps were drawn Australia had lost six wickets for 70.
