MANUKAU YACHT CLUB.

Great interest was manifested in the racing hold in, connection with the above club ■last Saturday afternoon, there being two races on the programme. First and foremost was the one for the club's handsome champion cup, which was sailed for. last year for the first time, and won by Mr. P. Farrell's Moa. -r. The course, as fixed in the emotions, was as follows: Start from be two coal and Railway wharves, and sail lound seventh red buoy off the Horn; thence round dolphin off Railway Wharf; again round the seventh rod buoy, finishing between Mangero dolphin and south side of Railway Wharf, distance about 14 miles. There were four boats competing in the race, the Moa, Ladysmith, Sarah, and Slaka Maile. Chief ' interest was centred in the Sarah (last year's runner-up for the cup) and the champion onerater Maka Maile. All the boats got away smartly at' three p.m., there being a moderate south-west breeze blowing at the time, but which gradually decreased towards-, the finish. . Ladysmith drew windward position (Moa, which drew that position in the first instance, being a non-starter); then came Sarah and Maka Maile." The last' two boats kept on nearly even terms until the white bluff was reached, when Maka Made drew ahead, and, gradually increasing her lead, wpn with plenty to spare; _ Sarah V filling second place, with Ladysmith a. good 15m. behind third. • Mr. Far'rell therefore again secures the coveted trophy, holding it for one year. The other race was one of the club's usual handicap events, held fortnightly, and was won rather easily by Mr.- Green's Fedora, with Mr. Smith's Pretoria second. 1 . The following were the entries:Malua, Belle, Tui, Pretoria-, Mascotte, Mizpali, St: Anns, Nautilus, Industry, Iris, Endeavour, Molly Swash, Petrel, Myrtle, Fedora, Daisy, Neva, Esma, and Ini. Fedora lias shown remarkable improvement in her sailing abilities this season, for although brought back \7m. she wop the race with ease, which reflects great credit on her present crew, who have* apparently got her in the very best trim. The next handicap race will most likely be sailed on Saturday week, the 15th inst., when some valuable trophies will be sailed for.

Siren passed the finishing-point first, in the second-class yacht race, but Kotare won on time allowance, with Muritai second,_ Atalanta third, and Siren fourth. The third-olass yacht race was won by --Ma-; haki. In the first-class yacht race Rainbow took a course too far to leeward of Korokoro buoy in the beat across the harbour, and the buoy was rounded first by lorangi, with Waitangi second. This order was then maintained till the finish. Maritana was a long way in the rear. The winner of the firstclass yacht race takes the Mills Memorial Cup for one year, and the winner of the second-class yacht race the Levin. Memorial Cup for one year. ■ \

NOTES ON THE YACHT RACE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Sunday. On Saturday the lorangi again proved her superiority in the handicap race for first-class yachts. lorangi, Rainbow, and Waitangi started from scratch, whilst the Maritana, the only other, competitor, had 15m. time allowance. Rainbow and Waitangi got away together, 15,5. ahead of lorangi, Maritana being last of all to start, 235. behind lorangi. The boats had a leading wind down the harbour, a moderate north-wester, and kept well together, but having rounded Worser Bay buoy Rainbow, in the beat across the liarbour. took a course considerably to leeward of Korokoro buoy, off Petone, whilst both lorangi and Waitangi, in the second and third places, remained a good distance to windward of the buoy. Maritana was at this "time a long distance in the rear, and quite out of the race. Rainbow secured the best of the wind, and, showing good weatherly qualities, made : a smart beat across, . but had to put about under Nga-hauranga cliff and make a beat down to Korokoro buoy. This mistake in tacks proved fatal to whatever chance she had of winning, for lorangi- and Waitangi, in their well-judged course to windward, were able to weather the buoy without difficulty. lorangi was a few minutes ahead of Waitangi, and this advantage she kept in the run down to the finishing-point at Queen's Wharf. The finishing times were: lorangi, sh. lm. 295., 1; Waitangi, sh. sm. 385., 2; Rainbow, sh. Bm. 585., 3. The finishing time of the Maritana was sh. 53m. 2s. The winner (the lorangi) was sailed with great judgment by her owner, Mr, A. H. Turnbull. Waitangi travelled bettor under her new mainsail than she did on the previous Saturday. Three of the boats carried topsails at one stage or other of the race. Waitangi was unable to do so, owing to the size of her mainsail.
