A match was played, President's v. Vice-president's teams, in which the latter •won by 17 points, the scores being respectively 167 and 150. Tho President (Mr. Harvey) at half-past-two o'clock addressed the assemblage of bowlers. He welcomed the visitors to the green, hoped they would spend a very pleasant afternoon, and then, according to ancient custom, threw the "jack" across the green, and declared it open for the season. Mr. Malcolm Niccol then asked those present to sing the National Anthem, and called for threo cheers for the New Zealai# contingent, which that afternoon was leaving Wellington for South Africa to do battle for Queen and country. The Newmarket Bowling Club, which opened its new green for the season's play on Saturday afternoon, should occupy a prominent place in the bowling world this season, seeing there is now only one club in thai district, instead of two. The enterprise displayed in securing their present green from and absorbing the Parnell Club deserves to have a fitting reward. There was a large attendance of bowlers and their friends, both ladies and gentlemen, when the president (Mr. C. G. Laurie) came forward and said lie was pleased to welcome so many ladies and gentlemen present, and thanked them for honouring the club with their company. He congratulated the club upon its progress, leing now in possession of 12 rinks, and its success in winning the pennant flag and champion fours' shield', as well as being runners-up for the single-handed champion of champions. The thanks of the club are due to Mr. Kilgour (green superintendent) for his painstaking care and constant energetic attention to the green, which would be found in good order for play. Mr. Laurie then called upon his little daughter Ethel to throw the " jack" across the green, and declared the green open for play for the season, Rinks were quickly formed and play commenced, the proceedings being enlivened by excellent music provided by the Newmarket United Brass Band. The grounds around tho green were extremely bright, with flags, flowers, and pretty dresses. The splendid asphalt promenade looked particularly gay as the ladies formed into groups, chatting together. A large number of ladies dispensed afternoon tea, .and their assiduous ministrations to the creature comforts of the players and visitors .was greatly appreciated.
