BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEWMARKET. Tilt! ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council look place last night in the Council Chambers, Jlanukau Road. Present: Messrs. Wliyman (chairman), McColl, Laurie, Edgcrly, Lee, Spooner, and Lumpkin. A letter was rend from tho Mayor (Mr. J. M. Laxon), apologising for his unavoidable absence through being confined to his bed by an attack of influenza. Eden-street: A request from ratepayers residing in Eden-street, that the Council undertake tho formation of the street, was referred to the Streets Committee. Municipal Franchise: A resolution was parsed, condemning the Municipal Franchise Reform Bill. Carlton (lore Road: The Council resolved that they could not accede to the request of Mr. F. A. liio that they should cut down tho sides of Carlton Gore Road level with the permanent road. Glasgow Terrace: Subject to the Streets Committee passing (lie work, the sum of £24 12s 6d was passed for payment In connection with the Glasgow Terrace drain. PARNELL. The ordinary meeting of the Pnrnoll Borough Council, hold last night, was attended by Messrs. N. W. Pollard (Mayor), Briggs, McCabo, Page, Fitts, Friend, Thomas, McConnoll, and Cozens. Overcrowding 'Buses: In reply to a complaint from tho Council, Inspector Hickson wrote staling that tho police had been instructed to take action in cases of overcrowding 'buses. Tho letter was received. Drainage: Tho Railway Department called attention to surfaco drainage from Portland and Bedford Streets flowing on to the railway embankment. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee, tho foreman of works to take measures to effect temporary remedy. Boatshed: Mr. A. T. Pittar was granted permission to erect a boatshed in Judge's Bay. Hedges: The Legal and Finance Committee recommended that a ratepayer whoso hedge encroached on Manukau Road be notified that unless she cut it back to the legal lino within seven days, the Council would be forced to take steps to compel her to do so. The recommendation was adopted, and it was agreed to notify all property-owners with hedges encroaching on public roads, in similar terms. St. Stephen's Cemetery: Mrs. Bloomfield was granted permission to plant macrocarpa trees along tho St. Stephen's Cemetery fence, provided they wero not allowed to grow higher than 10ft. Mrs. Bloomfiold's application to bo allowed to plant trees along Judgestreet, facing her property, was deferred, the applicant to be asked for further particular's as to kind of troes, etc. Night Service: Mr, Friend gave notice of motion for next meeting, as under:— in view of tho constant complaints ro nightsoil service, the Council seriously reconsider tho adoption of tho double-pan system, and as the only tender rccoved some time since was excessive, tenders bo invited from Australian or other contractors, on the same lines as previously agreed to."
