GENERAL MINING ITEMS.

Samples of ore obtained from five different places owned by the Waihi Dredging Company on the banks of the Obinemuri river have been forwarded for treatment to the Thames School of Mines. The report from the Thames School of Mines, to which 40 sacks of tailings had been forwarded for treatment, is that from 33601b dry weight the pans extracted Gdwt 16gr bullion, worth 23s la per ounce, and representing a saving of 20 per cent, of the gold and 1112 per cent, of the silver and 1875 per cent, of the vs'ue. The cyanide test is as follow:—364olb dry weight of the tailings yielded 2oz 9dwt 20gr of melted bullion, worth 19s Id per ounco, representing a Bovine of 935 per cent, of the gold and 454 per cent, of the silver and 90 percent, of the value. A meettoe of the Pigmy Gold Mining Company was to have been held yesterday at the office of Mr. Elliot, Bank of New Zealand Buildings, but an adjournment had to take place for want of a quorum, the heavy gale preventing Coromandel shareholders reaching A iicklmd* The directors of the Clunes Gold Mining Company have determined to continue the work in their mine by contract, under the supervision of Mr. Thomes Radford, who has been appointed to that position.

MINE MANAGERS REPORTS. Kino of Waihi (Wajhi, May 9).-The drive has been extended farther distance on the reef. TJie quartz in the present face

assays bettor than any we have tried yet. All the quartz in the reef, which is 70 feet through, carries gold. All the quartz looks better in the bottom of the drive. Waitekaobi Kino (Waitekauri, May 13).Driven the low level 150 feet through a splendid class of sandstone; in the face there are nice veins of quartz through it, and I think we are near the Waitekauri Kin? line of reef. This reef was opened out in the King ground, and was found to be six feet. The Ellen reef is further ahead yet. As to the two tons of ore to be sent to the School of Mines, there is one ton out ready now. The last breaking out showed gold in the stone. Byron Bay (Waitekauri).— country is very hard, containing a great deal ot quartz. Freedom (Thames, May 11).-Driving the crosscut ahead; the hard belt of country is not quite penetrated yet, but there is every sign of it not lasting much longer. We have met with two leaders, one running with us and the other across. Great Kapanoa (Cororaandel, May 11). —Drive on the leader : The reef is three feet thick, and a little gold can be obtained by pounding and washing. No. 2 drive: A small leader three inches thick, crossing the face, has been passed through. Sheridan (Tapu, May Started to fork the water out of the winze below No. 3. Four-in-Hand (Waikoromiko, May 9).— The big reef still maintains its size, and although on the last breaking down I did not see any gold, it carries very favourable Indications. The hangingwall leader when last broken down snowed a little gold through the ore, but I did not save any picked stone. The big reef can be traced right through to the north-west boundary. Waiui Extended (Waihi, May 9).—No change of any importance. Maritasa (Owharoa, May 9).—The class of country m course of penetration is very favourable for gold, but difficult to break. Magazine (Thames, May Nothing new to report. Drive is still in same class of country, good firm sandstone for gold. Wealth of Nations (Karangahake, May ll).-Low level: The class of country is keeping good. Golden Lion (Waitekauri, May 11.— The contractor has finished the 200 feet of driving. British Empire (Waitekauri, May 11).— The country in No. 1 drive is of a very kindly nature, interspersed with the same class of leaders.

Golden Spark (Coromandel, May 9).— Low level: We have cut the reef, which is in two parts, each part beiug about 1 foot in size, with a horse of mullock in between, about 3 feet wide. The reef is very heavily charged with minerals, but showing no sold. May Queen (Thames, May 11).-Opening up Hayes' leader at ho. 6 level: The lode is 3 inches thick, showing colours of gold. From the rise going ease two stones are in progress, and colours of gold are seen. I believe it will prove payable. The crosscut at No. 4 level to intersect Clarken's leader : Another 10 feet should see the lode cut. Cambria (Thames, May 11).—In the Cambria section all the levels are very much crushed and come together, and would cost more to reopen them than to drive a new level in the haneingwall of the main reef. This drive would cut any small lodes running from the main body. Darwin section: I find that nearly all the small lodes have been worked from No. 1 down to No. 4 levels. There are two small veins being worked; the one between No. 6 and 7 leaders shows a little gold; the other in the rise does not look so well.

Cardigan (Thames, May H).-No. 2 reef is carrying some nice mineral, and colours of gold are seen in the quartz broken, the reef being one foot in thickness. In the drive going East the reef is disturbed with a watercourse following nearly the course of the reef. Going west, the reef is now IS inches thick, and the last breaking down a few colours of gold were seen. Talisman Extbndbd (Karangahake, May 11).— low level crosscut has been advanced through a firm class of sandstone. No. 4 reef: Size v om four to six inches, and it is encased in a good sandstone, and carrying good walls. The stone is of a kindly nature for gold. Brokkn Hill (Thames, May 9).—Low level crosscut: The ground at present is rather broken and heavy. Comstock (Thames, May 9).—The reef at present is fully four feet in thickness, and is divided into two portions by a horse of mullock one foot thick. The footwall portion is fully two feet thick, and is good looking ore. lam saving this in a paddock by itself as this portion gave the best result by assay. OuiNKMURi Syndicate.—Elliot tunnel: Total distance 715 feet of sufficient size for horse tram. The solid sandstone was met with at 600 feet and has continued first-class with strong mineral veins running through the country. Aunie Creek crosscut: Total distance driven 244 feet through first-class channel of country. A reef about two feet wide has been cut; it is mixed with sandstone or it may be termed several leaders, varying from one to six inches very heavily mineralised.

New Golcokda (Coromandel).-The shaft has reached the greatest depth below sea level of any mine between the Hi.uraki ami Blagrove's freehold. It is intended to sink to a depth of 150 feet before opening oat. The shaft is now going through nice sandstone country, and some nice quartz veins have been intersected. Two good lodes have been found in the upper workings, which will be cut into from the shaft and thoroughly prospected.
