CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the City Schools Committee was held in the Wellesloy-street Schoolroom, last evening, there being present Mr. J. Blades (chairman), Messrs. R. Farrell, J, A. Adams, G. Squirrell, P. Crowe, J. B. Fairs, W. Fricker, J. T. Julian, and Dr. King. Additional Teacher.—A letter was received from the Nelson-street School authorities, to the effect that the additional pupil teacher asked for had been granted by the Board of Education, Miss J. Qainlivan having been added to the staff. The head master also intimated that the new teacher had entered' upon her duties. The letter was reoetved.

Covered Way.— application was received from Mr. J. Eccles, aakitig_ that a permit be granted him for the erection of a covered way as an approach to his chaffcutting premises, adjoining the Chapel-street School. Mr. Farrell pointed out that the covered way had already been erected, and though encroaching on the school property it would not interfere, providing certain conditions relative co tne spouting;, and the ultimate removal at a mouth's notice if such, was deemed necessary by the committee. The application was accordingly granted with the above provisions. Chapel-street School.—The request of the Chapel-street School for certain articles for school use was granted. Mr. Blades called the attention of those present to the unsanitary stats of the Auxiliary School in Albert-street in connection with the Albertstreet School. In one portion of the building he had noticed that the unsatisfactory state of the draint<2e had necessitated the laying down of disinfectants, a most unhealthy state of affairs for the children, who also appeared to be suffering from the bleak, cold nature of the barn-like structure in which they had been placed, there being little or no means of artificial warming, the only fireplace existing being at one end of the building, It would be far better to send the children back to Chapel • street, oven if it meant a little over-crushing, than to allow them to remain at Albert-street under the present circumstances. On the motion of Mr. Squirrel!, it was decided to call the attention of the Board of Education to their letter of March 27. with reference to the proposed addition to the Chapel-street School, with a view to having the building proceeded with at once if possible. Education. — Mr. Worthingtoa, headmaster of the VVellesley-street School, wrote calling the attention of the committee to the fact that a male pupil, aged 11 years, had not yet passed the first standard. The letter was received. Increase of Salary.—Miss Jessie Weston, of the Beresford-street School, wrote asking for an increase of salary. The applicant has been teaching at Beresford-street School for 14 years, and at present is in charge of 240 pupils, her salary being £80 per annum. It was decided to forward the application to the Board of Education with a recommendation that an increase be granted. Headmaster's Report.— his 'annual report on the progress of school work Mr. Hart, head-master of the Beresford-street School, submitted a list of the school children on the roll for each quarter in the year, together with.the average attendances for the four terms, illustrating the fact that many parents only send their children to school regularly during the term in which the annual examination is held. Supply of Pokl.— was decided to accept the offer J. J. Craig, for the supply of coal, coke, and firewood, for the ensuing winter months, on the same terms as last yoar. Queen's Birthday.—lt was decided that in view of the Queen's Birthday falling on the Sunday, a public holiday be proclaimed for Monday, 25th inst.
