BALL AT MANGAWAI.

Fbiday, the Ist May, has proved itself a redletter day \n the annals of Maugawai. The ladies of that place tendered a ball to their bachelor and other friends, the former being in evidence. The invitations numbered over sixty, and embraced the following districts: —Kaiwaka, Pukekaroro, Waipu, Wellsford, and Hakaru. The hall was beautifully decorated with pohutakavra, etc., the paperwork being the handiwork of Mrs. E. H. jsggar, and was much admired. On entering the hall the first object that caught the eye •was the motto, "Hope On, Hope Ever," executed by the above lady, and no doubt ■the significance of the suggestion was fully reciprocated by the bachelors present. The committee of ladies have every occasion to congratulate themselves on the success of their venture. The soi-disant element was conspicuous by its absence, which is not always the case at some of the local entertainments. The secretary (Miss Bishop) deserves great kudos for her untiring exertions to make it a success, being ably assisted by her committee. Conspicuous among the latter was Miss S. Bowmar, who undertook the duties of M.C., discharging them to everyone's satisfaction. Refreshments were handed round at midnight by .the committee, and were fully appreciated. After midnight the duties of M.C were taken over by Mr. W. S. Sarah. The muni-cians-MissL. Clarke, Messrs. J. Clarke, J. Webbe, and T. Lye-proffered their services gratuitously, and deserve much praise for their efforts. It is, as everyone knows, a very delicate matter to chose a belle, more so when the beau must also be mentioned; but I think on this occasion the majority will ? agree thati Miss Bowmar takes the honour of • belle,, and Mr. William Lee that of beau The. following are the names of the com- •'• mittee:—Misses S. Bowmar, Smith, Carter Pooley, and Mrs. Webbe, with Miss Bishop - (secretary), Mrs. i. Sarah (treasurer) Viewing tho entertainment on the whole, the j ladiesLofjMangawai.may rest assured that -' their efforts have been crowned with success. j—[Own Correspoudejjit,] f >
