Morse, arrived in harbour at 5.15 a.m. on March 1, from San Francisco, Honolulu, and Apia, after a very fast trip or IS days 134 hours. The Alameda has the reputation of being the- speediest boat in the mail service between the colony and San Francisco, and on this occasion has once more proved herself a " flyer," as will be seen from the following record of the days runs : — From Honolulu : '286. 346, 354, 334, 364, 348, 264. From Apia : 360, 347, ."US, 345. The weather comiug on thick on Thursday night Captain Morse slowed the steamer down until daylight, otherwise the Alameda would have made faster time than she did. THE GRACE DENT NAUTICAL • INQUIRY. The nautical inquiry into the wreck of the schooner Grace Dent on the Wanganui Bar was concluded on March 9th. The decision stated that the magistrate aud the nautical assessor were satisfied that the schooner was in a perfectly seaworthy condition. The evidence showed that the wreck was caused by the grossly reckless navigation of the master in taking the bar when not signalled to do so, when he had been expected to put to sea, and when he was aware that his vessel drew 8 feet 6 inches, and that there was not over 7 feet on the bar. The conduct of the mate was of a negative character (the master accepting the sole responsibility), and while admitting th&mate did not act as one would expect a smart officer to act, the Court was of opinion that he could not be held responsible for the wreck, and his certificate would not be interfered with. The master's certificat* as master would be suspended for 12 months, but His Excellency the Governor is recommended to grant him . a certificate as mate during such suspension. The master was ordered to pay the whole costs of the inquiry, amounting to £4 17s. THE lONIC.
