The Grand Masonic Lodge of Georgia has recognised the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. During January the total arrrivals in tha colony numbered 3551 and the total departures '2254. The headquarters in New Zealand of the Bank of New South Wales is to be removed from Christchurch to Wellington in May. The Government have acquired Mr. Burton's Maeraewhenua estate, 25 mile* north of Oainaru. It contains 11,000 acres of fertile land, and will be cut into farms of 200 and 500 acres. The Napier Telegraph is informed that a Wellington syndicate, in communication with English capitalists, are now lending money at from four and a half to five per cent. It is said that they control a capital of eight millions. It is gratifying to find that Auckland is becoming the home of a great number of small industries. Since the beginning of the year no less than 470 factories have been registered, the largest figure, it is believed, of any town in the colony. The Lending Board under the Advances to Settlers Act sat at Wellington, and passed about 150 applications. The loans granted included £13,000 for Auckland district, £8,000 for Taranaki, £27.000 for Wellington, and £12,000 for Otago. The Board will sit on alternate days next week, and deal with the more pressing applications. Captain* Fairchild reports that at Campbell Island it was found that several cases s%ored in the depot had been broken into, while a small boathouse erected some few yards distant had been entered and a quantity of goods comprising blankets, shirts, etc., taken away. All the other depots were found in good order. No seals were seen at Campbell Island, and only a few at the Auckland Group. At the latter, however, the skeletons of about 25 were found, the crew of some whaler having evidently been at work. The Standard Insurance Company has now attained its majority, the meeting held at Dunedin on Monday, the 4th of March, being the 21st. The report presented showed a profit of £12,645 9s 9d, out of which a dividend of 7$ per cent., and a bonus of 2£ per cent, was recommended, also to add £1000 to the reinsurance reserve fund, which will then stand at £15,000, and to carry forward £4145 9s 9d. Messrs. M. Joll and A. C. Begg were reelected directors. It was mentioned that since 1890 the companyhhr,a r , added £12,000 to the reserve fund. The directors of the Colonial Bank, in their half-yearly report for tfie period ending 28th February, declare thai the net profits, after deducting interest paid and accrued, and all other charges, amounts to £13,664 7s Id, which, with £8227 lis M brought forward, gives £21,891 18s lOd. From this has- to be deducted £1191 3s 4d land, income, and note tax, leaving available £20,700 15s 6d. The directors recommend this to be applied as follows :—The pay* men! of a dividend at the rate of 6 per cent, per annum, £12,000 ; balance to be carried forward, £8700 15s 6d. The Hon. R. Oliver is the retiring director. A copy of the annual reports, statement? of accounts, and returns of the Auckland Harbour Board, together with the chairman's address, hasi been forwarded to us by the secretary. The pamphlet contains a great deal of detailed and useful information concerning the business of the Board. The total receipts for die year ended December 31, 1894 (including balances from 1893, to the amount of £P378 lis 10d), were £47,198 16s 2d, and the expenditure £39,538 7s sd, leaving balances amounting to £9660 8s 9d. The estimated income for the present year is £41,966 13s 3d, and the estimated expenditure £35,122 17s 9d. The valuation of lands reclaimed from the sea and reserves, the property of the Board, compiled from the valuations of the city valuer, and approved by the supervisory committee, is set down as £287,400. The assets of the Board are stated to be £676,10» 14a 9d, and the liabilities £365,376.
