THE APPLICATION DECLINED.

At the meeting of the Auckland City Council last evening the question of the running of trams on Sundays agaiu came up.

The Town Clerk read a letter from Mr. J. S. Kidil, manager of the Tramway Company, with reference to the application by the company. The manager stated that serious objection to the matter would be overcome when it became known that other motive power than horse would be introduced. Letters were received from the following societies protesting against the running of the trams on Sunday Auckland Trades and Labour Council, Knights ot Labour, Women's Political Reform League, Ponsonby Baptist Church, and Ministers Association. W. E. Sadler wrote on the same subject. Two petitions were presented to the same end : one by Mr. Sticlibury, with nearly 500 signatures, and the other byMr, Trenwith, containing over 600 names. The Revs. Burgess, Monro, and Collins, members of the Ministers' Association, were present at the meeting. The Legal Committee recommended that the application from the manager of the Tramway Company re permission to run trams on Sundays should be declined. The Mayor moved " That the Legal Committee's report be adopted." The motion was seconded and adopted, no discussion taking place. The Mayor thanked the deputation from the Ministers' Association for their presence, and informed them that the Council had declined the application.
