A SAD CASE AT HAMILTON.
[BY TKLKOKAI'II.—OWN COKTUfI'ONDKNT.] Hamilton, Monday. A fatal case of measles occurred yesterday to the wife of a man named Thomas Galdenvood, who is working up the railway line. It was reported to Cc/istablo Forbes by .Dr. Brow is that "Mrs. (/alderwood was lying in an almost empty .house with two children suffering from iveasles, and without food. Ho visited the louse, ascertained that the facts of the case. were as represented, and sought tho secretary of the Charitable Aid Board, Mr. Turner. Ho at once, on his own author,by, sent a woman to look after tho family, and supplied them with necessaries. On Svturday night Turner saw the Constable, and told him that the chairman sanctioned what had been done, but that the attendance of the woman would have to be withdrawn on Monday. Constable Forbes represented the necessity of the case, eventually saying that he would, at his own etpense, have the woman attended to if the Charitable Aid Board would not undertake the case, and report the whole circunstances to the Board. Tho house whete the woman was lying was in a filthy condition and without furniture, the woman herself lying on a bundle of flax. Dr. Brevis saw the family again, and suggested as ft way out of the difficulty to send the suTerors up to the hospital. The hospital authorities were, however, at first unwilling to receive the children, but the matter being atlast arranged, Constable Forbes had them sent up to the hospital as measles patients. Dr. lire wis stated that the woman was in a critical slate, and she died lust night. It ix difficult to understand how the hospital authorities could refuse to receive patients suffering from measles. Great credit is iua to Constable Forbes that the : unfortunate woman did not die in her own house of neglect, for had ho not persistently insisted upon her being cared for the death would have given rise to a great scandal.
