LAWN TENNIS.
OPENING OF THE EDEN AND EPSOM CLUB. The Eden and Epsom Lawn Tennis Club was favoured with lovely weather for the opening on Saturday afternoon, and in spite of the counter-attractions elsewhere, there was even a larger number of visitors on the ground than at this function last year. Upwards of 400 ladies and gentlemen visited the lawn during the course of the afternoon. The Tr'uda Brothers gave a selection of popular airs durine the proceedings, and this departure was much appreciated by those present. The appearance of the _ lawns generally was splendid, and judging from the way the five courts—which the ground contains—were kept occupied by continually changing, sets of players, the turf was in tip-top condition. During the afternoon tea and cakes were handed round by the members of the club. Amongst the players were to be seen the lady and gentleman champions, who, by the way are both members of the club, and from the way they were wielding their racquets thus early in the season they seem likely to maintain their positions through the coming summer. The secretaries and representatives of all the associated clubs were also present, though it is to be regretted that more of the lady visitors did not come with racquets and shoes for play, and the courts were therefore mostly occupied by the gentlemen. No doubt this was partly owing to a feeling of shyness at having to play before such a large, and for the most part critical audience as is present on these occasions ; more especially is this feeling experienced by those ladies who, though fond of the game do not aspire to exalted positions of champions or club representatives. The good beginning the club has made augurs well for its having another very successul season. AUCKLAND BOWLING CLUB. There was a good attendance at the Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon.
