SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

ANNUAL ELECTIONS. TK AROIIA.

The meeting of householders called for the purpose of electing tho To Aroha Goldfield's School Committee took place on April 27, in the school-house. There was only a fair attendance, compared with tho bumper house we used to have in former years. 'The charm of electing all our comraitteemen on the spot being dispensed with, no doubt accounts for the apathy shown by the electors. The following report for the last year from the retiring committee was read by the Chairman, tho Rev. F. G. Evans :—Finance : Wβ commenced the year with a balance in hand of £10 4s 7d, and after paying all accounts due, which includes some for work which will not requre to be done again, wo close the year with a credit balance of £3 8s 4d. There is also a small balance to tho credit of the school fete account. Teaching staff: During tho past year, the Board have seen fit to make several alterations in the staff of the school, Miss Hould, Mr. Oldhaui, and Mr. Sim- ' monds having been removed to other districts. Miss Cbad also resigned her position through ill-health, and her place was filled by Miss Laud. State of school: Wo are happy to state that the school still continues to be in a good and efticiont etate, the inspector's reports being very satisfactory. A3 showing the efficient state of the school, we are pleased feo report that a junior scholarship was won by John Erasmus, and a certificate of proficiency by Harold H. Law, at the last scholarship examination by the Board. This, wo think, reflects great credit upon the head teacher and his assistants, as only a small number of scholarships were won in the whole of the Auckland district. An examination in drawing was held in December, under the auspices of the Auckland Society of Arts, anil it is gratifying to know that out of 937 candidates two of our scholars, J. Erasmus and C. Cox, received certificates in grade 1, marked good. The committee beg to express ther acknowledgement of the efficient services rendered by the head teacher, Mr. \V. H. P. Marsden and his staff of assistants. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The next business was the election of the new committee. Only five persons had been nominated, viz., Messrs. J. S. Ingram, C. Ahier, J. La very, Rev. F. G. Evans, and Rev. J. Law, leaving two to be tilled to complete the number required, when the two following gentlemen were elected—Messrs. F. O'Toole and James Mills. At the close of the meeting the newly elected committee met, when Mr. C. Ahier was elected chairman and the Rev. J. Law secretary and treasurer.

PORT ALRKKT. The annual meeting of householder* of this district took place on Monday, 27th April, under the regulations of the new School Committee Election Act. Litten, 29; J. A. Shepherd, 29; W. Hefford, 29 : Peter Becroft, 23 ; J. G. Turner, 22 ; J. S. Mawer, 19 ; T. A. Gubb, 7 ; G. T. Hartnell, 4. The first seven were declared ejected. After the retiring , chairman, Mr. Waters, had submitted his report to the meeting, which, by the way, was considsred financially very satisfactory, there being about £7 to the credit of the committee, the business of the election was proceeded with. From various causes considerable interest has been manifested in this election. Nine candidates were nominated, viz., W. Cramp, J. Wilson, J. Levet, F. Oldfield, C. Levet, A. Waters, T. Fletcher, E. Wilson, C. Gray, all of whom it may be presumed, were eager for tho honour of being comrnitteomen. Levet, and T. Fletcher. The new committee held their first meeting tho same evening, Mr. J. Leveb being elected chairman for the ensuing year. Much satisfaction is expressed by residents that our school is at last being worked full time. It is now in charge of Miss K. Calvert, who commenced her duties on 2Sth April. It is to bo hoped that parents will show their appreciation of tho charge by sending the children to school regularly. By doing this they will greatly assist the teacher.— [A Correspondent.]
