SPORTING.

London, May 30. At the Newmarket Spring Meeting to-day, the following was the result for

Thk On*k Thousand Guineas Stake; a subscription of lOOsovs each, h. ft. For three-year-old fillies, Sst 121b each. The owner of the second filly to receive 200sovs out of the stakes; and the owner of the third to save his stake. Rowley mile. (78 subs.)

Mimi, the winner of the above race, was bred at the Sledmere stud, and was purchased by Mr. Fenwick as a yearling for 1000 guineas. As a two-year-old she started on six occasions, winning four of her engagements, which included the Levant Stakes at Goodwood, and the Zetland Stakes, Two-year-old Stakes, and Clearwell Stakes at Newmarket, the total amount of her winnings in stakes being £ISS7. Melody, who ran second to Mimi, is the property of the Australian sportsman, Mr. Daniel Cooper, and, like the winner, was purchased for 1000 guineas. As a two-year-old she won two out of the six engagements which she fulfilled—viz., the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom, and the Orleans Plate at Sandown Park, which represented a sum of £1430.

LAKE RACING CLUB. A race meeting, under the auspices of the Lake (Takapuna) Racing Club, was held on Saturday afternoon; but, owing to the threatening state of the weather, the attendance was rather small, only about 309 to 400 putting in an appearance on the course. The races were for the most part devoid of any exciting interest, the fields beiug small, and the finishes not very close or interesting. The events were brought off in good time ; and, although the start was rather late, andthere were seven events on the programme, they were all over in time to allow the visitors from Auckland to return to the steamer Kagle by dusk. The officers who carried out the programme were:—Messrs. Fenton (judge), F. Quick (starter), W. Knight (handicapper), Fred. Wells (clerk of the course), Joseph Ansenne (clerk of the scales), and James Ansenne (secretary and treasurer). Messrs. Andrews and Adams had the conduct of the totalisator, which was fairly patronised, considering the number present. The tickets on each event were lfts. Hunter's Artillery Band accompanied the excursion ateamer'from the wharf at one o'clock, playing a number of musical selections to and from the Lake, as well as performing a good musical programme oh the lawn during the afternoon.

The following are the results of the race : — Handicap Maiden Plate of losovs. For all horses that have never won a race of the advertised value of 20sovs. One mile. Mr. J. Wilson's Fusilier, 4yrs, 7st ... 3 Waitai (7st 121b) and My Queen (7st 21b) also, ran. Bon Voyage won easily by a length. Dividend, £1 12s. There were 106 tickets, 42 on the winner.

Nigger (9st lb) also ran. Kate was the favourite. Nigger, who was also backed, disappointed his backers by baulking at the second hurdle, and the favourite was never dangerous. Bit o . Blue took the lead after the first half-mile, and won by a length from Nap, who made a great effort in the straight. There were '250 investors, of whom 50 were on the winner, and the dividend was £2 03. Lake Cup (Handicap) of 30sovs. One mile and a-half. Mr. B. Lyons' b m Tuna, 3yrs, 6st 101b (Ponnell) 3 These were the only starters, and the fact that Nap had just finished a severe race in the Hurdles left virtually very little interest in the race. Nap took the lead and made the running, followed by Tunu; the favourite, Tamora, being several lengths away at the back of the course, going easily, and allowing the others to lead on sufferance, for when given her head in the home turn the Musket mare came away and won as she liked by three lengths. There were 15S tickets, of which 73 were on Tamora, and the dividend was 19s.

Settlers' Race Handicap of 15soys.
