MURDER AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
At Melbourne shortly after seven o'clock on the 15th instant a man named Thomas I'helan, an engine driver on the railway, proceeded to his house in South Yarra, and on entering he took up a table knife and cut the throat of Ada Hatten, aged 25, killing her. Jealousy is said to be the cause, as Hatton formerly lived with him as his wife, but had deserted him for another man. After killing the woman, Phelan cut his own throat, but the wound is not serious, as the knife was not sharp. He was taken by the police to the hospital.
