THE NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedix, Wednesday. The annual meeting of the Convocation of the New Zealand university was held in the University .Library to-day. Mr. J. Inne*, M.A., presided ; and in the course of his remarks said he was opposed to giving, as Was proposed, an honorary degree to Miss Fawcett, as contrary to the statutes. The following resolutions were carried : — "That the Convocation views with satisfaction the appointment of graduates of the University as examiners for matriculation, and suggests an extension of the system. That the secretary be requested to renew its representation as to the necessity for a University College at Wellington. That the Convocation approves of the continuance of the system of selecting examiners for the degree examinations from outside the colony. That, while not desirous jf seeing the standard of matriculation lowered, the Convocation is of opinion that there should be greater uniformity in the standard of the matriculation papers with respect to (a) papers set from year to year, (b) the relative difficulty of the papers in the same year in different subjects, and that the convocation draws the attention of the senate to the extraordinary character of the paper set in geography at the last matriculation examination. That the definition of the subject (geography) for the B.A. degree and B.Sc. degree requires alteration, in that the subject as defined covers much more ground than the other subjects in natural science, including really four distinct subjects, viz., geology, paleontology, mineralogy, and petrography." The next meeting-place was fixed for Christchurch, the date being left with the chairman to decide.
