CRICKET.
The season for 1890 opened on Saturday afternoon, and a good muster was made at the Domain both of players and spectators, though the showery weather interfered quite as'much with the attendance as with the play. The United, Parnell, Alpha, and St. Mary's Clubs confined their efforts to practice, but the Auckland and Gordon played matches amongst their members. The members of the A.CO. did not muster as strongly as might have been expected, but sides were chosen by Messrs. A. M. Beale and C. P. Reid, and a very enjoyable game was the result Some very good form was shown, notably in batting by Messrs. Richards, Seccombe, and Blair, and some of the bowling was above the average, Howlett shining most in this department. Next Saturday sides will again be chosen, when, if the weather prove favourable, a bigger muster of members may be expected. For the innings played Mr. Reid's side of seven put up 60, while Mr. Scale's team compiled 93 for '2 wickets. The Gordon fixture was last year's first eleven against the rest of the club. The latter played first, but the bowling of the senior team was too good, and they were all out for 61, of which Gilfillan made 22. The eleven then went in, and with the loss of one wicket had equalled their opponents' score, IN. Williams playing a good innings. The Domain Committee appointed by the City Council inspected the pavilion, and decided to effect improvements at a cost of £150. New out-offices will be erected, and a bathroom and a cloakroom for ladies added to the present accommodation. The gallery in front of the building will be extended and made more convenient of access, so that the pavilion will be in the future considerably better thai: the crude and inefficient affair it has been for so many seasons.
