VICTORIA AMATEUR TURF CLUB'S MEETING. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright Melbourne, October 11. For the opening day of the V.A.T.C. Meeting the weather was threatening, and light showers fell before the Guineas started, but despite this there was a splendid attendance, and it is estimated that fully 15,000 pereone were present, which included His Excellency the Governor and suite. The proceedings opened disastrously for backers, the majority of whom looked upon Megaphone in the light of a " dead bird" for the Caulh'eld Stakes, but he did not gain a place. Mr. S. G. Cook's chree-year-old colt, The Admiral, received a fair amount of support for this race, which needs little description, as the favourite collapsed half-way up the straight, and Tom Hales landed The Admiral a winner by two lengths. The Hurdle Race fell an easy victory to Mr. S. Miller's Pingara, though Ulysses could have been closer up had he been persevered with. The Great Foa l Stakes was spoiled owing to a wretched start, and Lord Hopetoun, who was first away on the fall of the nag, was never headed, and won with ridiculous ease. The Caul field Guineas caused a good deal of excitement, and the weight of Mr. Brodribb's money kept Titan first favourite. Notwithstanding this the Ballarat division deemed Annesley a real "pood thing," and in consequence of Power being in the saddle, Air. Bailey's colt met with a good deal of support. The following are the results of the various events :— The Caulfikld Stakes of 500sovs, added to a sweepstakes of ssovs each for starters ; second, lOOsovs from the stakes. Half a mile from home the latter made up her ground in marvellous fashion, and joined the field. Here Titan made a forward movement, but entering the straight both Beverley and Prelude headed him, when Annesley came through, and smothering his field won all out by two lengths. Time, lm. 475.

Annesley, who is a full brother to Newstead, was bred by Sir Thomas Elder, of South Australia, and was purchased as a yearling by Mr. W. Bailey for (J'2s guineas. As iv two-year-old he sported silk on three occasions, winning? one of his engagements, which success was gained in the Two-year-old Handicap, run at Flemington on Queen's Birthday. Annesley is engaged in the V.R.C Derby and also in the Melbourne Cup, with 7st 21b.

Sir William is looking very sore. Churchill has been well backed for the Caultield Cup, and has hardened to 100 to 6.
