[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT ] Wellington, Friday. TREASURY APPOINTMENTS. I understand that Mr. C. T. Benzoni and Mr. A. M. Smith will receive permanent appointments in the Treasury. Mr. G. Campbell, who stood next in seniority to Mr. McGowan, has been promoted to the office of chief clerk. ministers' movements. Sir F. Whitaker and the Acting-Premier left this morning for the North lay train. Mr. Hislop left by stoamor for the South. The Ministers at the seat of Government are Sir H. Atkinson, Captain Russell, and Mr. Fergus. ELECTION humours. It is reported that Mr. Freeman Jackson is likely to stand against Mr. Ballance for Wanganui. If so, Mr. Gilbert Carson will retire. Mr. Jackson would stand as a strenuous supporter of the Government. the salvation ARMY and the election. The Army marched through the streets last evening, drums beating, banners flying, and held a meeting afterwards in the barracks in Taranaki-etreet. Their motto is, " Prohibition without compensation for the publican." PRIMAGE DUTY. This d'lty will not be collected after Tuesday next. The Customs authorities have notified shipping companies that for all cargoes now in harbour entries must bo passed before the 30th instant. THE LATE MR. STKRREY. The Government deny that they refused permission to Mr. Sperrey to take action against Mr. Thompson, member for Marsden, on account of certain allegations made by the latter during the late session of the General Assembly. BURIAL societies. Mr. Mason, Registrar of Friendly Societies, loft this morning by train for Auckland for the purjwse of instituting an inquiry regarding the complaint of a certain claimant against the New Zealand United Legal Friendly Benevolent Burial Society. The subject of this inquiry was referred to in the House last session through a question put to the acting Premier by Mr. Withy, and the Mon. Mr. Mitchelsen's reply thereto. It will be remembered that the acting Premier stated, in replying to Mr. Withy, that if there were any means by which the Governmer. : . could secure from the persons concerned the money of which people had been deprived an attempt would be made to obtain it.
