THE GENERAL ELECTION.

EDEN. We are informed by Mr. J. Greenwood, of Mount Roskill, that it is his intention to contest the Eden District against Mr. Mitchelson or any other man. Mr. Greenwood has been in the Auckland district almost since the city was founded. He is at present chairman of the Mount Roskill Road Board and of the Mount Roskill School Committee, and would, no doubt, receive considerable support in the district.

PARNELL. Mr. J. M. Lennox has definitely resolved upon contesting the Parnell electorate. He has received promises of warm support in various parts of ths district. Mr. Lennox will in due course announce his political platform. Another candidate for this constituency is spoken of, it being reported that Mr. Frank Lawry will contest toe seat. NEWTON. The members of Mr. Withy's late election committee met in St. George's Hall last night to appoint a deputation to wait upon that gentleman, in order to urge him to re-consider his decision not to stand for reelection. A notification appears elsewhere requesting electors of Newton not to pledge themselves to any candidate until the same has publicly expressed his views MANUKAU. Mr. W. F. Buckland offers himself as a candidate for the electorate of Manukau.

Mr. J. M. McLachlan writes to say that he thinks an effort ought to be made to induce Messrs. Goldie, Withy, and Monk to retain their seats in the next Parliament, and refers to what these gentlemen have done. We havo no doubt that a large number of the residents of Auckland will regret if these gentlemen finally determine to retire just at present, when it was hoped that a Parliament might be constituted which would be better than those we have lately had. We may remark, however, that we believe Mr. Monk will again come forward.

" An Elector" writes :—"I am at a loss to understand your remark in the subleader to yesterday's Herald re the Eden contest, I feel confident lam but expressing the general feeling of the Eden electorate that in Mr. Joseph Greenwood they have a candidate who will fully attend to their interests, if elected, and one who will keep his every promise to bis constituency. He has definitely announced his intention to stand, and knowing that it is in response to the request of a large number of Eden electors, I can with confidence state that he will go to the poll against all comers."
