DROWNING ACCIDENT IN THE HARBOUR.

At four o'clock yesterday morning, while the mail steamer Zealandia was being coaled, one of the seamen belonging to the Arawata named William Godfrey lost his life by falling overboard the coal hulk Neptune, which was lying alongside. The following are the particulars :—Deceased who was one of the free labour crew of the Arawata, was engaged with the second officer of thatsteamerin throwing lines to the Zealandia, when he unfortunately lost his balance and fell overboard. One of his comrades promptly jumped in after him, and succeeded in getting hold of Godfrey, but owing to the strong tide rip, had to let go, and the unfortunate man shortly afterwards sank. A boat was got out, and a search made, but it was fruitless. Deceased has lately come from the gumfields, and it is not known whether ho lias any friends in Auckland. As one of the free crew of the Arawata, he had been brought down to work at the mailboat, and it was while engaged in his duty he met his death. The Water Police will have a search to-day for the body.
