FRACAS ON BOARD A SHIP.
[by telegraph.—press ASSOCIATION. ] Lyttelton, Sunday. At one p.m. to-day Captain Adams, of the British ship America, wounded one of the crew of the vessel, an A.B. named Carl Johnson, aged about 20 years, by a revolver shot. It seems that the cook of the vessel, who has been a trouble on board for somo time, left the vessel this afternoon and got drunk. He returned to the vessel at dinner time, and upon the captain asking him why the dinner was not ready, the cook (Stockall) used some insulting language towards him. A struggle followed, and the cook took hold of a large knife, and threatened to use it on the captain. The men were parted, and after a time the captain returned from the cabin, and told the cook if he repeated the expressions previously used he would shoot him. The cook, who was under the influence of drink, at once further insulted the captain, who fired a shot. The bullet missed the offending cook, but struck Johnson, who was standing some nine yards directly behind the cook, in the right thigh. The bullet has not been found. Botii the captain and the cook were arrested.
