MEETING OF UNIONISTS.
ACTION OF THE MARITIME COUNCIL APPROVED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—press ASSOCIATION. Curistchurch, Friday. A roe meeting, under the auspices of th« Labour Unions, was held at the Theatre, to-night. About 2000 were present. Mr. F. S. Parker, President of the Trades and Labour Council, presided. The proceedings were orderly. Resolutions were carried approving of the policy of the Maritime Council in the struggle for the fundamental principles of unity ; expressing the opinion that the Union Steamship Company has committed a grave error in bringing 011 the present crisis, and should withdraw from the Australian Ship Owners' Association in their and the colony's interest; deprecating the aggressive policy adopted by capital in the present struggle, being fully convinced that its continuance will injure capitalists' own interest affirming that the surest mode of protecting capital is by improving the condition of the labourer; condemning the present universal competition as the cause from which the difficulty between labour and capital originated ; recommending a system of mutual co operation as the only means of removing the existing abuses satisfactorily ; viewing with regret the action of so called free labour, and considering that those bj whom such labour is supplied are acting in contravention of their own country'! interests.
