A boxing contest, between William Smith and Harry Laing, for the championship of New Zealand and £50 a-side, with the champion belt, took place on April 24 before a large number of spectators on the racecourse, Wanganui. After the thirteenth round both men apparently were as well able to hit out as at first. This, however, was destined to be the last, as Sergeant Manning stopped into the ring and arrested both men for in a public place in a manner calculated to provoke a breach of 1,0 peace. The case was heard on the 3rd May and dismissed.
A curiously-shaped nugget, recently obtained from one of the claims at Mahakipawa, has what appears to be Hebrew characters <-"aced upon it.
