Among the recent contributions which Sir George Grey has made to the Grey Collection in the Free Public Library, is some interesting correspondence under the the hand of Governor Fitzroy, and of interest in connection with the early history of New Zealand. The correspondence relates to the native disturbances at the Bay of Islands caused by Hone Hoke, at the cutting down of the British flagstaff at Kororareka. There is a journal, containing 29 letters, covering dates from 10th January, 1845, to 18th March, 1845, of a most interesting character. The signature of Governor Fitzroy is a work of art, and it would be rather difficult to forge it. That of Captain Beckham, R.M., which appears in the correspondence, is still more difficult, and,it is scarcely to be wondered that a detective once was unable to read or swear to it on a warrant, and the accused was diecharged by o, Tasmaniao. magistrate,
