TRAMWAY ACCIDENT AT PONSONBY.

, i ' Yesterday forenoon an accident of a dis- . tressing character occurred on! the Tram--3 way Company's western circuit, and in the j Ponaonby Road, ito a lad named Peter > Ness, 12 years of ; age. The accident oc- ' curred about half-past ton o'clock, opposite • Vermont-street. The lad, as seen oy two 1 passengers, ran out from under a verandah, ' and without either calling to driver or 1 conductor, attempted to jump on the front • platform. He had a parcel in his hand, • and ho missed grasping the guard iron, the > momentum of the car throwing him down, 1 the car wheel passing over his left wrist. ' l The whole thing was so sudden that the ' driver, John Donovan, states he never saw 1 the boy run out to the car, but only saw him falling down, and had no chance of putting on the brakes in time, and it was : not till after tho accidont occurred that 1 Conductor Warren know of tho boy's pre--1 sence. Driver Donovan promptly reined » in his horsos, but too late to save tho boy's ' arm. The poor little fellow was taken into > Mr. Bloinfield's chemist's shop, whore Dr. i Davoy was called in, and he obtained the ■ aid of Dr. Bayntun. After doing what < they could to relieve the boy's sutTerings ' they thought it advisable to sond him to tho k Hospital, where his arm was subsequently amputated. The lad was employed by Mr. > Mcrhorson, Karangahape Road, and was ; on an errand at the time of the accident. ; His father is a warder at the Asylum, and > two of his sons are drivers in the Tramway ) Company's employ.; Driver Donovan is one i of the oldeet employes in the service of tho ' t Tramway Company, and bears the reputa- [ tiou of being one ;of tho most careful and [ experienced drivers on the road. Constable McConnell, of the Ponsonby police station, states in his report that ufter making care- ' ful inquiry, it appeared that the boy had no ! one to blame but himself.
