WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Saturday. EDUCATION AXD RETRENCHMENT. The Hon. Mr. Fisher told tho teachers last ■ night, at a banquet to tho delegates from the provincial districts to tho Educational Institute, that ho had boon ablo to savo £60,000 in the expenditure of tho department without any sacrifice of efficiency. You are already in possession of his views on other topics. The Hon. Mr. Fergus was at the banquet. RAILWAY COMMISSIONERSniP. It is publicly stated that the candidate for this office, whoso name has been forwarded from the Agent-General in London, is a Mr. Roes, of the North-Western Railway. He is describod in the Post as "Assistant Deputy General Manager" of tho lino for tho Liverpool districts. His official designation thus stated (Assistant Deputy) would imply that he is an officer of tho third rate in second rank, but I am not aware there is any official authority for that statement. It may, however, bo correct. PROVINCIAL JEALOUSY. Lord Onslow, the new Governor, will no doubt entertain a vivid sense of tho character of the press of New Zealand when ho reads the following warning, which appears in tho Post this evening, comment on which would spoil it: —'' It would bo interesting to know at whoso suggestion Lord Onslow proposes to land at Auckland, instead of coming , direct to Wellington. It is decidedly inconvenient that the Governor should first land elsewhere but at tho seat of Government, and if His Excollcncy is such a bad sailor as reported, he would save a few miles of sea voyage by coming direct to Wellington, not to mention the journey overland or by sea from Auckland here. If ho is well-advised, he will change his programme aa to route."
