TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The visit of the Emperor William to Pope Leo XIII. must have been little better that an amusing treat to the great Pontiff who now presides over the Roman Catholic Church. The spectacle of two youths, 60 to speak, like the Emperor "William and Count Herbert Bismarck advising Popo Leo to what he should do must have appeared rather ludicrous, both to the Pontiff himself and his Cardinals As to how the Roman question may, in the development? of European politics, be eventually settled, 1 would not venture to determine ; but one thing appears certain, Germany desires peace, to develop her industrial and commercial notions of greatness ; and neither friendship nor philosophic ideas of statesmanship have anything to do with the peregrinations of the German Emperor.—l am, &c, E.F.G.
