WELLINGTON*, Friday.—With reference to therefusalox the Marine Department to recognise service as third and second mate in the coasting trade as olticers in the service for the purposes of enabling persons to be examined for certiiicates as hrst mate or master ordinary, a further communication on the subject has been received by tho Department from the Victorian Si earn Navigation Board, in which iho latter states that its rule is similar to that in force in this colony. It is understood the Minister of Marine intends bringing the matter under the notice of the Board of Trade, with a view of ascertaining whether it cannot be altered, so as to allow of recognition of coasting service as third and second mate for the purpose of enabling persons to be examined as lirst mate or master ordinary.
